The story is based on the first half of an Indian novel, Kohbar Ki Shart, Keshav Prasad Mishra. Brahman is a farmer from Uttar Pradesh living with her two nephews. She becomes ill and is treated by a Vaidya (Indian doctor) to another village. When the farmer feels good, ask the Vaidya for their fees. The Vaidya asked the older peasant nephew to marry his eldest daughter. The farmer agrees.
